Activities at the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary
The Sanctuary boasts enviable conditions for a wide array of environmental educational, and recreational activities ranging from bush and river walks, bird watching to game viewing of small to medium size wildlife, such as, common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia), porcupine (Hystrix indica), bushbuck, (Tragelaphus scriptus), vervet monkey (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), hyena (Crocuta crocuta), reptiles, including crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) along the Lingadzi river, and diverse bird species (with over 150 species identified in the Lilongwe District, with some occurring in the Sanctuary).
The freedom and variety of the nature-based activities makes the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary unique area, within the City of Lilongwe for the youth, the public, and adventurous holidaymakers who enjoy unfettered access to the joys of a near pristine wilderness. Whether a peaceful, reclining holiday or rigorous, excitement-filled adventure is desired, each guest is certain to find what is needed at The Sanctuary.
Exploring the interior of The Sanctuary affords visitors the privilege of experiencing the wide array of natural vegetation indigenous to the Sanctuary and the Lilongwe Plateau. Designated lookout points will be established to offer perfect locations for sundowners and birdwatching.
The Sanctuary also has auditorium (to be rehabilitated), which displays wildlife artefacts, and information on a fully spectrum of the Malawi’s ecosystems and the encompassed biodiversity. To broaden knowledge about behavioural ecology, DEVECON will install infra-red night and day vision cameras at strategic sites in the Sanctuary to capture the behaviour of wild animals, such as hyaena, duiker, porcupine, etc., which still exist in the wild in the Sanctuary for children to observe while seated in the auditorium. This will provide a unique approach to educating both the youth and adults about wild animal behaviour both during the day and at night.
Open to the Public
To add an ambience of a fun, the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary will:
Feature Traditional Dances
During weekends to educate the youth, and visitors about Malawi’s cultural diversity.
Develop a Children’s Playground
For young children, who besides learning about nature, will enjoy playing with peers while visiting the Sanctuary with their parents.
Upscale the Existing Rustic Restaurant
As a “market tester”, focused on establishing and maintaining quality and creating a strong identity in the local market. This will be achieved through providing a fun and energetic environment, with unbeatable quality food (local & exotic) cuisines and beverages at affordable prices in a clean and friendly outlet.
Open a Boutique
In partnerships with local entrepreneurs, where T-shirts depicting Malawi’s landscapes, culture, and wildlife, among many other merchandises, such as framed wildlife photos, ceramics, etc. will be sold.
